County cricket match delayed as ball is locked in umpire’s room

RAIN and bad light stopped play are a common occurrence in England – but a county match was halted for a rather more unusual reason today.

In their championship match with Gloucestershire at Bristol, Essex’s second innings was delayed as the umpires had locked the new ball in their room and were unable to open the door.

Reports from the ground suggested the officials could not remember the combination to the lock – but 12 minutes later the situation was resolved and the game resumed.

A statement on Essex’s Twitter page said: “Essex 2nd innings delayed by 12 minutes after umpires unable to get into their room to collect new ball.”
